Sixth Cuts — A Barber Shop & Maid Agency Sharing One Warm Space in Singapore

Project Overview
Two businesses, one shared unit
Sixth Cuts is a barber shop that shares a single retail unit with Nurtura6, a maid and employment agency. Two very different businesses under one roof, on one lease — a growing reality for small operators in Singapore where retail rents make a full unit hard to justify alone. For many, sharing a lease is what makes the cost of a first commercial shop renovation viable at all.
As commercial renovation specialists in Singapore, Skai Atelier was engaged to make the arrangement feel intentional rather than improvised. The brief was simple to say and harder to design: give each business its own identity and clear customer flow, while keeping the space open, warm, and unmistakably a place people want to sit down in.
Design Concept
Making a small footprint work harder
The whole project turns on spatial discipline. When one compact unit has to host a grooming service and an agency counter, every metre has to earn its place — the same space-saving layout thinking we bring to small SME fit-outs. Our approach focused on:
- — A clear divide that gives each business its own frontage and identity
- — A full-height mirror and glazed shopfront to borrow light and depth
- — Wall-mounted shelving and slim cabinetry to keep the floor open
- — A single warm material and lighting language shared across both sides
The Palette
A warm theme that sets the mood
The ambience is carried almost entirely by colour and light. Soft tan and clay-toned walls, muted olive-green cabinetry, and pooled warm lighting replace the hard white and chrome you often see in a barber shop. The result reads calm and grounded — a room that flatters skin tones in the mirror and quietly signals that both the cut and the consultation happen somewhere considered.
Spatial Strategy
Openness through restraint
Rather than partitioning the unit into two small boxes, we kept it visually continuous and used the glass frontage, a floating mirror, and low storage to zone the space. Sightlines stay long, daylight reaches deep into the unit, and the barber chairs sit against the window so the work — and the warm interior behind it — is on display to the street.

Outcome
A shared space that feels like a destination
The finished unit lets Sixth Cuts and Nurtura6 operate side by side without either feeling like an afterthought. Customers read the space instantly, the small footprint never feels cramped, and the warm palette gives the barber shop the sit-down ambience it was after — proof that a compact, shared unit can still be designed to a considered standard.
Why It Works
Design that respects the budget and the brief
Sharing a lease is a commercial decision as much as a design one — and renovation cost varies widely across office, retail and F&B. By leaning on colour, light, mirrors, and wall-mounted storage instead of heavy construction, the fit-out delivered atmosphere and function without over-building — a practical model for any small operator trying to make one modest unit do more.
